Photo Essay introduction...

The Romería de la Virgen de la Victoria is held each year on the last weekend of May and is one of the most important and deeply rooted celebrations in Martos. The celebrations last three days, from Friday through Sunday. The schedule traditionally includes:

  • Friday: The Virgin is transferred in procession from the Ermita de San Bartolomé to the Parish Church of Santa Marta.
  • Saturday: The principal pilgrimage day, when the image is taken in procession to the sanctuary at La Peña, accompanied by decorated floats, horses, music, and thousands of pilgrims.
  • Sunday: An outdoor Mass (Misa de Campaña) is celebrated, and the festivities continue through the afternoon.

I took the photographs on the Saturday, mostly in the vicinity of Plaza de la Fuente Nueva and Ermita de San Miguel.
